3. OS type and the version:windows XP
4. UA (phone), gateway or other hardware/software involved:X-Lite 3.0

6. Your problem:
Hi I am a student new to SIP.I am using Brekeke SIP server and X-Lite to experiment and analyse the SIP protocol.
I am trying to use the authentication feature in the SIP server.
server side
I have set the Register field under configuration/general/authentcation to ON.
client side(X-Lite)
I am using User name and password fields in the X-Lite phone.
do i need to do some thing else?
But i am getting the 403:forbidden error.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Yes, there is one more step. Please add the user and password under the authentication tab in sip server. What you did was turn on authentication. What that does is check the user id and password from the xlite phone against the list of authenticated users in the sip server. You must enter the authenticated user in the sip server and then your register will succeed.
