2. Java version:

3. OS type and the version:

4. UA (phone), gateway or other hardware/software involved:
Aastra 480i

5. Select your network pattern from http://www.brekeke-sip.com/bbs/network/networkpatterns.html :

6. Your problem:

UA is Aastra 480i SIP phone.
Sometimes there is obvious echo calling between extensions. Most of the time, the echo only happen on 1 side, and the other side is fine.

Anybody have any idea why it's this?

Thanks.

Have you contacted the Aastra's support?
Echo problem usually depends on phones, not server.

Yes, server will not cause echo unless there is large amount of latency between the phone and the server.

From the server you should ping the ip address of the phone and see the latency. Over 100ms or maybe 150 depending on your phone you will get echo if phone does not have good echo cancellation. Actually there is almost always echo but you can't hear it if it happens too fast after you speak. Only when high latency you can hear it when it waits some time after you speak.

another way to battle echo is turn the speaking and listening volume down on the phones. A phone transmitting too loud can cause echo. Also check if you have jitter buffer setting on phone and turn the jitter buffer way down for testing. If conversation does not break up then don't increase it. Only increase it if call breaks up and stop as soon as it doesn't.

Latency is a big enemy that causes echo so keep latency down and volume down. Make sure you have newest firmware for phone as manufacturers are still learning how to do voip.
